Drawing on a request you sent a while ago, today I’d like to take into consideration the work of the wedding planner, her function and her payment.
We already talked about who a wedding planner is and what she does (http://ungiornounsogno.blogspot.it/2013/10/cosa-fa-una-wedding-planner.html), but unfortunately our role is not that clear yet, for both our customers and our suppliers. Partly it is certainly our fault, because we often gloss over the technical aspects of our work not to bore you, and we focus on more romantic topics that can make you dream.
But there are circumstances in which it becomes clear how little people know about what we do, what our work consist in and how it should be done. That’s why today I will move away from fairytales and I will give you a little insight into the materialistic part of our job.
Without repeating what a wp actually does, today I’d like to talk about a ticklish topic, that is usually missing in most blogs because it has absolutely nothing elegant or romantic: our payment.
Lots of you think that a wp can give free advice and suggestions because the suppliers give her a commission. I have no intention of talking about professional ethics, but I’d like you to to consider this: if you have a problem with your sink and you call the plumber, would you think of not paying him because the company you buy the supplies from will give him a commission? You have to think the same for us wp: the search for the right supplier and their coordination are activities that require the wp’s time, professionalism and knowledge and that have to be paid for, just like in all the other professions.
You also have to consider that “nobody does something for nothing”, and this is certainly true! So, if a wp is really paid only on commission from the suppliers, don’t you think that the suppliers themself would charge you more to afford the wp’s commission? This way you would pay the wp anyway, but without really noticing it.
That’s why it is really important to me to state clearly and from the beginning to my clients that my time and my work are valuable. You can easily know how valuable it is by simply asking a free estimate in which I state the details and prices of my services.
I won’t bore you any longer, and I promise that my next post will be less serious and more colorful, but I’d like you to understand that it is important to me to tell you what I offer with complete onesty, and to be sincere and clear in telling you what I do for making your special day unforgettable!
See you next week!
